George Smart achieves Competent Adviser Status

We are delighted to announce that George Smart has now achieved Competent Adviser Status (CAS), marking an important milestone in his journey with Walker Crips Financial Planning and enabling him to advise clients independently as a fully qualified financial planner.

George first joined Walker Crips Financial Planning in July 2022 during his placement year while studying Mathematics at the University of York. Since then, he has progressed through the firm’s internship and graduate training programme, demonstrating exceptional commitment, professionalism and technical ability at every stage of his development.

After completing his degree, George returned to Walker Crips Financial Planning in September 2024 as a graduate and successfully achieved the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning (DipPFS) from the Chartered Insurance Institute within just 12 months — an achievement that highlighted both his dedication and aptitude for the profession.

Over the past six months, George has worked closely with Matthew Crawshaw, Financial Planner, throughout his supervisory period. During this time, he has supported clients with their financial planning needs, attended meetings, developed trusted relationships and gained valuable experience helping individuals and families achieve their financial goals and objectives.

In recent months, George has successfully transitioned into advising clients independently and has now formally achieved Competent Adviser Status.

George said:

“I’m incredibly grateful for the support and guidance I’ve received throughout my time at Walker Crips Financial Planning. From my placement year through to achieving CAS, the experience has been invaluable. Working closely with clients and helping them make informed financial decisions is something I’m passionate about, and I’m excited to continue developing my career with the firm.”

Don Formhals, Finance & Operations Director at Walker Crips Financial Planning, commented:

“George’s progression through our internship and graduate training pathway has been outstanding. He has shown real dedication to both his studies and his professional development, and achieving Competent Adviser Status is a fantastic accomplishment. George has built strong relationships with clients and colleagues alike, and we are extremely pleased to see him reach this important milestone in his career.”

George’s success also reflects the strength of Walker Crips Financial Planning’s long-standing partnership with the University of York. Through programmes and initiatives offered by the Careers and Placements team, students are encouraged and supported to access valuable hands-on work experience, and a pathway into the financial planning profession.

Today, George works closely with clients to deliver tailored solutions aligned to their financial planning objectives. He is passionate about helping individuals, families and business owners make confident and informed financial decisions, while continuing to work towards achieving Chartered Financial Planner status.

Everyone at Walker Crips Financial Planning congratulates George on this fantastic achievement and looks forward to supporting him in the next stage of his career.
